Rainfall energy harvester
2015
This chapter provides a detailed study on the harvest of the energy contained in raindrops by means of piezoelectric transducers. The energy harvester has the role of an electric source, able to recharge storage devices of small electronic components, such wireless sensors, by using the vibrational energy released by the drops hitting the transducer, reducing in such a way the chemical waste of conventional batteries. In technical literature, diverse studies agree on the level of suitable generated voltage on the electrodes of a piezoelectric transducer subjected to rainfall, but a complete characterization on the supplied power is still missing. This work, also to limit optimistic forecast…
A Study on the Measurement Instrumentation for a Custom-Made Bipendulum Impact Testing Machine
2008
Experimental investigations of structures under impact loads are normally carried out by means of drop-weight testing rigs, which are often tailor made, and require sensors for fast transient measurement of mechanical quantities (namely, force, displacement, velocity, and absorbed energy). Since these tests are quite expensive, time consuming, and, often, not repeatable, the sensors must provide reliable and interpretable results in the first trial. In this paper, a thorough study on the measurement instrumentation suitable to carry out reliable low-velocity impact tests by means of a custom-made bipendulum impact testing machine is presented. Attention has been focused on the choice of the…

Study of Atrp Process for the Grafting of Vinyl Monomers on PVC and PVDF

STUDY OF ATRP PROCESS FOR THE GRAFTING OF VINYL MONOMERS ON PVC AND PVDF Sonia Lanzalaco, Onofrio Scialdone, Alessandro Galia, Rosalia Mauro, Flavia Lazzano Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica, Gestionale, Informatica, Meccanica, Viale delle Scienze, Palermo e-mail: sonia.lanzalaco@unipa.it ATRP (atom transfer radical polymerization) has been recently used to prepare graft copolymers with regularly-spaced polymer chains from polymeric macroinitiators that have pendant chemical groups containing radically transferable halogen atoms [1]. The halogen atom serves as initiation site for the polymerization of side chains. Furthermore, Matyjaszewsky and Gennaro showed that an externally applied ele…
